It has been a pleasure working with all of you, and we wish you very happy and successful marriages. To the grooms ~ you all have chosen wonderful women to be your brides ~ congratulations.

The 2011 season is slowly creeping up and before we know it, the new year will be here. Inquiries for 2011 are already coming in and reservations are being taken.

Now will HST affect our vacation rental?

Starting July 1, 2010 we will be required to charge HST on all vacation rental stays. Currently, we charge GST of 5%. If you made a booking with us and will be staying after the July 1 date, we can waive paying the HST by you making full payment of your stay prior to May 1.

Reservations made after July 1 for any stay will be subject to HST = 12% on your stay.

Holiday in my home town

With the holidays behind us, it's time to start thinking of your 2010 vacation. Why not stay local? Sooke Ocean Resort is a fantastic place to stay and play. In 2008, I spent a week of my holidays right here in Sooke with my family.

Of course, it was only minutes away from my own home, but it was a place where we could all be together and keep our families close and enjoyed being with each other. Using the harbour kayaks, crabbing, relaxing in the hot tub and enjoying great views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca made it seem like I was away from it all. We visited local attractions ~ Sooke Pot Holes, Whiffin Spit, Fishing Charters, Sooke Harbour House and more! My family came from Vernon and Port McNeill. My nephew, Lukas was a new born and seeing him for the first time was such a treat ~ he's a little gift to all of us. This week brought my dad to visit which is something I'll treasure always. He wasn't one for travelling out of the North Island, but being all together brought him to Sooke. I will forever treasure my holiday in my home town, with the passing of my father this past November my Sooke vacation is and will be my most memorable.

So you don't have to go far, to enjoy your holidays....make memories locally, just like I did!

It's Ralph's birthday Sunday Aug 23rd and we are hosting a party for him at Sooke Ocean Resort. The theme of the party is BBQ. We will be having fresh salmon, crab, prawns, and grilled vegetable pizza. But what do we pair with the vegie pizza? Simonsig Chenin Blanc from South Africa is the perfect mix of floral, ripe peach and pear aroma that meld into a mild palate of honey, pineapples and melons flecked with minerals and enough acidity with cheese and grilled veggies OR we could try Wirra Wirra Scrubby Rise sauvignon Blannc from Australia. It is fresh and drywith grassy, green melon, grapefruit floours flecked with lime rind and homey. A perfect match for a vegetarian pizza.

Wedding Bliss

At 3:00 pm this afternoon two very in love people said "I do" and became life partners. An absolutely beautiful ceremony. The back drop for the wedding was the Strait of Juan de Fuca, with the blue sparkling sea and the Olympic Mountains peeking throught the light cloud cover.

Fifty five of their friends and family came to celebrate and support the happy couple. A warm summer breeze brought a fresh feeling to the ceremony. Friends as far away as Australia attended the event.

There were several tears in the house as the couple said I do, and sealed the deal with a kiss, and then another cheers from the guests encouraged more kisses. Delicious plates of appies were brough out for all to enjoy.

The couple rode away on a motorcycle with side car, down Horne Road. (oops helmets) but looked great doing so. A celebration into the evening. So nice to see two people so much in love!

Philharmonic Fling

July 19 Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra - "The Philharmonic Fling!"Ed Macgregor Park The Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra will be performing the 8th annual Philharmonic "Fling!", an open air pops concert in a park by the sea in Sooke. 2:30 PM. The gates open at 1 PM to allow everyone to stake out their favourite spot (bring a blanket or lawn chairs), and perhaps enjoy a picnic, either bring your own or enjoy the on site concession. Under the baton of conductor Christopher Taber, soloists are Merrie Klazek, trumpet, and Julian Vitek, violin. The theme of this year's Fling is "Fanfares and Gypsies". The afternoon will also include an appearance by The Sooke Pipes and Drums under Pipe Major Angus Stanfield. Admission to the concert is FREE, the Sooke Philharmonic's recession fighter! The concert is sponsored in part by Butler Brothers Supplies Ltd., the Don Chrysler Memorial Fund, and the Egon Baumann Music Foundation. The Sooke Potholes are freshwater pools eroded into the limestone path of the Sooke River, which downstream, feeds into the Sooke Basin. The polished rock pools of the Sooke Potholes provide a popular swimming spot for locals and visitors alike. In autumn, spawning salmon swim upstream through the area.The Sooke Potholes can be found at the end of Sooke River Road, which is just off the main highway (#14) that leads from Victoria to Sooke.

An "Eco" or "Green" Wedding is a wedding that considers the environmental and social impacts of the event. This includes everything from the invitations, to catering, honeymoon and travel. Listed below are some suggestions to consider when considering an "Eco Wedding". .

1. Location: Choose a location where the majority of your guests won’t have to travel too far. Make sure that the location you choose has recycling and compost systems in place. Yes, Ralph has this one down!

2. Invitations: Create a simple website and an inline invitation. Create a blog or Twitter Account. Still feel the need for a paper invite? Choose recycled paper and make smaller invites and reply cards.

3. Caterer: Go organic! Choose a local caterer and one who uses local in season produce and local seafoods/meats. Sooke Ocean Resort can assist you with one! We have an in house chef who can create some amazing meals.

4. Clothing: “Eco” doesn’t have to be frumpy. There are lots of amazing designers using eco-fabrics for both men and women. Check into local taylors who knows, your dress of your dreams might be waiting for you!
